Though I created this piece from raw fabric, I made it into a skirt and a long train attached to a beanie before I finally landed on just a long flown durag. Durags have been a protective head covering used by the African American (Black) Community for literally ever. I love me a good durag. I love the way durags flap in the wind when it blows, it makes me feel like a super hero! So, I created this piece with that energy in mind. This was all about owning my culture as a black human, standing in my power, and advocating for my people. This was crafted during a time where I was constantly seeking self knowledge and deep diving into my blackness. I was told by someone that durags were created in the military as a protective barrier between the kevlar helmet and black troops’ hair. It then began to evolve into every day where beyond that… allegedly. Sounds cool, if true.
So if you’re on a journey of deeper self wisdom and you want to rep yo’ blackness with pride, this the one! You will literally feel un-fuck-witable!!
